The Woodlands School

Parents Information

Your child will receive information about careers throughout their time at The Woodlands School. As part of our commitment to delivering a high-quality, fully inclusive careers programme, we work in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks. Our aim is to ensure every young person has the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to move confidently into adulthood.

We provide opportunities for students to develop life skills, independence, and core competencies valued by employers, by enabling them to take part in employment activities, enterprise events, and meaningful encounters with the world of work and further education.

How can you help your child with careers and employability?

There is so much you can do to support your young person:

  • Show a genuine interest – Talk regularly about their ideas for the future and ask what they see themselves doing.
  • Talk to them about your career – Explain what you do in your job and describe other roles you have had. This helps your child understand the different pathways people take.
  • Explore workplace experiences – Ask your employer if they would allow you to bring your child to work for a day (during school holidays).
  • Research post-16 pathways together – In Years 10/11/12, explore local colleges, day centres, Local Offer pages and social care websites to see what courses and options are available (see links below).
  • Look at local opportunities – Help your child explore employers, apprenticeship providers, supported internships and further education courses available in our local area.
  • Attend Open Days and Careers Events – Keep an eye out for college open days, training provider events and local job fairs. Information can be found on college websites and in the school newsletter.
  • Support them to understand all post-16 options – Including apprenticeships, traineeships, vocational courses, supported internships and specialist provision (see apprenticeship links below).
  • Encourage involvement in out-of-school activities – Clubs, hobbies, volunteering and community groups help build confidence, social skills and qualities valued by employers and tutors.
  • Stay connected with school support – You or your child can speak to the school careers adviser at any time for guidance. Contact details are available below.

These actions support the high expectations of the Gatsby Benchmarks—especially Benchmark 1 (Stable Careers Programme), Benchmark 2 (Labour Market Information), Benchmark 3 (Addressing Individual Needs), Benchmark 7 (Encounters with Further and Higher Education), and Benchmark 8 (Personal Guidance)—ensuring we work together to provide the strongest possible foundation for your child’s future.
