Just as we promote our school values that hold us together as a community, at The Woodlands School we also celebrate and promote British Values. We teach these through our school curriculum, our assemblies, our extra-curricular opportunities, and our own school values.
Democracy
Having a voice and being able to use it is a central part of being a pupil at The Woodlands School and equipping our children with the tools to enable them to communicate is an essential part of what we do here. Our children are given opportunities to make choices in their school life. Students at The Woodlands School know they have a voice, and that their voice matters. Every year the students elect their school council, each term the school council meets and presents their ideas and views to the Deputy Head. The Head Students then meet with the Headteacher to discuss the outcomes of their views. Councillors know that their role is important in the school and that their suggestions can make a big difference.
Our pupils use their voice in their EHCPs, by giving their views and being actively involved in their EHCP meetings.
Rule of Law
Distinguishing between right and wrong is an enormous part of the work we undertake at The Woodlands School, as the students practise navigating challenges and disappointments as well as celebrating success, while acting within the rules and boundaries set in place. Children are taught the reasons for the rules we have and value their importance by understanding how they are there to protect them and others. 'CREDIT' gives the children ownership of the rules in their class, and consequently children take responsibility for their own behaviour. Children know they should contribute positively to the life of the school and that this also applies when out in their communities.
While at The Woodlands School students will have opportunities to engage positively with the local police by meeting with PCSO’s.
Individual liberty
Every day, students at The Woodlands School are encouraged to explore their choices in an environment where they feel safe and confident. Working within clear boundaries, each individual will have the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular clubs and activities and express themselves. Children are taught their rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms through our values 'CREDIT', PHSE/Citizenship and e-safety lessons. They understand how to exercise these rights and freedoms responsibly without impacting on the happiness or wellbeing of others, helping them become caring and thoughtful citizens.
Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
The curriculum is carefully planned to expose children to the widest possible range of cultures, religions, beliefs and backgrounds to reflect the diverse nature of British society and our local community of Milton Keynes. Students will leave The Woodlands School equipped with the skills and knowledge which will enable them to understand and interact with people’s differing beliefs. We help them to understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity. Students learn to understand their disability and the diverse community of our school and beyond, taking part in diversity events throughout the school year.
Our pupils are given opportunities, through community trips and visitors to our school, to meet different people within their local community and engage with our local places of worship.
